Review: new Poly Palette 'Noble Browns' hair dye line in 536 Light Ash Brown

For years I have been searching for a drugstore hair dye that has the exact words "light ash brown" in the name. I was growing out my natural hair. I am a light ash brown, and it was dyed in light ash brown to hide any difference in color. I don't like spending money on a hair dresses, but I also hated hair dye boxes. Rarely did I get the result I wanted, and if I did, the color would get brassy anyway after a while. My hair dye was ok after a professional coloring, but after a while, it had turned brassy despite using filtered water and silver shampoo.

I decided to search every box at the store to find a 'light brown ash' shade. Last time I looked, I couldn't find anything. My previous technique for finding a light ash brown shade was to look at the grid on the side of the box to eyeball the ashiness of the result, and some shades looked very ashy, or the name sad "ash blonde". I also used blonde shades to lighten my hair or I used dark blondes and shades called icey brown. Boxes that simply had my desired shade on the cover were off limits because those turn out darker than expected.

But I realised that the brands do not promise any ashy result as long as the word ashy is not in the name, so it had to in the name, full stop. Found something new that sounded wonderful: Poly Palette Noble Browns Collection in 536 Light Ash Blonde. I had dyed with the brand before and my hair turned out super black and dry, it's really cheap and kinda bad for the hair. When it comes to my hair's health, I prefer L'Oreal Excellence. Their conditioner leaves my hair so so soft, thick, souple, smooth and glossy, like a dream, not that I loved their colors (always always too reddish).

My main goal was to smooth out the difference between my natural light ash brown hair and the sort of brassier tone that was growing out. The difference was very minimal, barely noticable, otherwise I'd see a hairdresser of course. But the difference between a 7 euro hair dye in a box and a 100 euro trip to the hair dresser is so huge to me.

So I picked the option where I should let the product sit in for 30 minutes on the entire hair, because I didn't see a point in giving my roots a "head start" (haha), since the roots weren't so much the problem. They looked a bit too light, a bit too ashy from all my silver shampoos, so I wanted to focus on the entire hair and in particular my brassy lengths.

The scent was... to my surprise... nice! I almost wanted to smell more of it. The dye was nice and clear and easy to work with. One box was enough for my entire hair. 30 minutes is quite fast as well. It did stain my forehead a bit. After rinsing, it left my hair pretty dry despite using the conditioner. L'Oreal Excellence definitely feels better on my hair.

I couldn't wait to see the result. As I dried my hair already noticed that my hair was ashier. There were definitely green and beige tones in that hair dye. The coverage seemed to be like 90%, because I had the feeling that in some light, especially strong sunlight, and on my smartphone, my previous dye was showing through a little, but on my picture you can see that my hair is perfectly light brown ashy in tone. It looks like that in filtered sunlight, in bathroom light and outdoors in the shadow. Compared to previous pics I made in the same exact bathroom light, my hair had definitely lost a few shades of brass!

Here is the result:

Before and after:

PRO:

- Perfect color!

- Ashy!

- Smooth coverage of natural and dyed hair: no patchiness

- Nice scent

- Enough product

- Easy to use, and rinse

CON:

- Dry hair

So if you are looking for a subtle, safe to use light brown ash shade, whether it is to tone down brassy brown dyed or natural hair, or to smooth out subtle differences in hair tone between roots and lengths, I can totally recommand this hair dye. I think I even found my favourite hair dye of all time.

(PS: L'Oreal Excellence has some cool, anti brass shades online but they are hard to get where I'm from and it takes a lot of shipping expenses, but if you are from the US for example, you might be able to buy them at the store)
