Disney has a new princess.

Well, a new actor playing an existing princess, to be precise.

Halle Bailey has been announced as Ariel in Disney's latest live-action remake, The Little Mermaid.

She's probably best known as half of duo Chloe x Halle, has a lot of celeb fans and can count Beyonce as a mentor.

So what do you need to know about the 19-year-old actress and singer?

She's one half of singing sisters Chloe x Halle

Halle is the younger sibling in the R&B duo - they started posting songs to YouTube as teenagers. Chloe is 21.

Originally from Atlanta in the US, they moved to LA with their family at around the same time they started posting their songs.

They performed at the 2019 Super Bowl pre-game show and were nominated for two Grammys this year, for best new artist and best urban contemporary album.

And the sisters have connections with Disney already - their song Warrior was on the soundtrack for Ava DuVernay's 2018 Disney film A Wrinkle in Time.

She's got Beyonce to thank for a lot

Beyonce is a bit of a fairy godmother to Halle and Chloe.

After they posted a Beyonce cover to YouTube, they were among the first signings to her record label Parkwood Entertainment.

They featured in Beyonce's video for the song All Night and have supported her on some of the dates of her world tours.

As a three-year-old, Chloe played a young Beyonce in the 2003 film The Fighting Temptations.

And Halle will follow in Bey's footsteps as a Disney actor - as Queen B voices Nala in the upcoming Lion King remake.

She's got a lot of celebrity fans

Celebs have been flocking to congratulate Halle for landing the role of Ariel.

Ariana Grande wrote on Instagram: "I can't express how happy and excited I am at all."

Other stars who've commented on Halle's Instagram post congratulating her include Willow Smith, Chrissy Teigen, Jordin Sparks and Gigi Hadid.

And almost-namesake Halle Berry had a simple message: "Halles get it DONE."

Halle and Chloe star in Black-ish spin-off Grown-ish.

They play athletic twins Jazlyn and Skylar Foster, who go to college with Yara Shahidi's character Zoey Johnson.

Yara was full of praise for Halle's new role - she posted on Instagram: "You have expanded the world of powerful princesses in so many ways."

Halle told Time magazine last year that her family moved from Atlanta to LA "on the dream of living out what we want to do".

"We knew that being out here was definitely better for the music scene," she said.

In the same interview, her sister Chloe said: "From 10 and eight we just wrote our own songs, and that's how we learned."

They learned instruments and songwriting through YouTube videos and online tutorials, thanks to their dad.

Chloe added: "Ever since we were little girls, our dad instilled in us the importance of not having to rely on anyone, and having a do-it-yourself attitude."

You Just Can't Wait To Be King?

The new takes on classic characters continued with Alfre Woodard as Sarabi; JD McCrary and Shahadi Wright Joseph as young Simba and Nala; and Keegan-Michael Key, Eric André, and Florence Kasumba as the trio of hyena troublemakers.

Beyoncé Is Great at Everything... Except Designing Clothes - VICE

Posted: 11 Jun 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Beyoncé launched a new line of Beyhive merch Tuesday after hyping fans that there would be a big drop of some sort last week—and the looks are actually... nothing special.

It's a minimalist collection of T-shirts, bodysuits, and assorted stuff-you-could-get-from-Zazzle (like socks, bags, bike shorts, and tanks), most of which say "beyhive" in a small font (or repeated in a large font) somewhere on them. The few departures from that are confusing at best—there's an Indian-themed one that spells out "beyhive" in Devangari script—minus what's arguably the best thing in the drop, a $30 set of two Beyoncé-branded bandannas. The mediocrity of her new merch may come as a surprise to some who are still enjoying their "Homecoming" Nefertiti-inspired merch or happily sipping tea from Lemonade mugs that read "BOY BYE." But for those of us who remember a few of Beyoncé's previous fashion endeavors, like House of Deréon and the original Ivy Park, it seems like designing fashion lines may be the one arena where Queen Bey has yet to be the trailblazer she typically is.

The culture may have decided to collectively forgive and forget Beyoncé and Tina Knowles' House of Deréon, which was unofficially discontinued in 2012. But let's revisit that. The mother-daughter pair launched the line—named after Tina Knowles' mother Agnéz Deréon—in 2004, with the idea that the clothes would be inspired by three generations of women in their family. Beyoncé later launched a juniors collection called Deréon with her sister Solange Knowles. But the resulting clothes, most memorably the dresses, had a busy, over-the-top vibe that made them look like they were made for people who had a prom coming up in peak-reality-show-era New Jersey, or a bar mitzvah in the tropics, or a quinceañera on a boat somewhere. Bey herself couldn't always pull the looks off.

It wasn't just the designs that needed help, either; the concept itself was pretty confusing. Take this promo video from 2009, where Beyoncé goes from nearly getting blown over by an oncoming tropical storm at a shoot in Bermuda to an underground cave shoot with 2000s ring-tone sounds playing from her 2008 Lady Gaga collaboration track "Video Phone." Even Beyoncé herself had to admit that the Bermuda rainstorm shoot went south and the cave vision wasn't clear to her at first.

House of Deréon isn't just a head-scratcher in the context of today's standards. It somehow was too gaudy for 2000s and early 2010s America, when gaudiness and tackiness were the name of the game. We're talking about a time when wearing bright red aviator party glasses with red bars across the lenses while dancing to The Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" or having a huge bedazzled Ed Hardy sketch on your shirt was unironically a good thing. But even then, House of Deréon was just a little too much.

After the House of Deréon's juniors line was quietly discontinued in 2012 and the rest of the operation winded down unofficially in the years following, Bey started an athleisure line in 2016 called Ivy Park with the U.K.-based international high streetwear company Topshop. Ivy Park may not have generated the same self-parodying promo videos as House of Deréon, but it also didn't make much of a statement in the world of athletic clothes, or the world at all. The line's so-so athleisure wear was modeled largely by skinny white girls in sweatpants and sliders. There was no radical social commentary about beauty or athletics, though its name did reference a park where Beyoncé learned her signature self-discipline. But Beyonce is clearly aware of the way sports can be used to challenge racial politics. In the same year she launched Ivy Park, she invited Serena Williams to twerk by her side in the video for "Sorry," completing Lemonade's story of Black women persevering. Beyoncé also had backup dancers wearing Black Panther-esque berets at her 2016 Super Bowl performance months before Colin Kaepernick's kneeling protest began. But who knows, maybe she's saving that commentary for her upcoming Ivy Park relaunch with Adidas, considering they've been more willing to make political statements supporting Black athlete-activists like Kaepernick in recent years.

We might be judging Beyoncé unfairly, or setting the bar too high, now that Rihanna has made it clear what Black fashion entrepreneurs can do, between catering to women of all skin tones and body sizes with her beauty lines and weaving Black fashion history lessons into her Fenty clothing launch in May. But the bar can never be too high for a visionary like Queen Bey. She powerfully challenges notions of beauty in her own visuals by depicting Black bodies, especially Black women from the South, in new, bold ways. It just doesn't quite add up that the night before her big Adidas launch, her account teased fans with a tweet of a Britney Spears selfie video where Britney sports an Ivy Park crop top and announces she's about to go jet skiing.

Beyoncé's lack of showstopping, trailblazing fashion entrepreneurship is baffling, but only because she's already given us a fierce vision of what she wants to contribute to the world. And that vision has used fashion to empower generations of Black women in a way no performer has done before. We just want to get in on the action and see what it would look like if she kept that same energy for looks we can access.

Spike Lee Honors Denzel Washington at AFI Gala, Beyonce Drops By - Hollywood Reporter

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 12:00 AM PDT

'Black Panther' stars Chadwick Boseman and Jordan feted the actor, along with former co-stars Julia Roberts and Jodie Foster.

Many of Hollywood's top creatives— from Spike Lee and Issa Rae to Ava DuVernay — were on hand at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Thursday night to honor the latest AFI Lifetime achievement award recipient Denzel Washington. But the night's first presenter was a star no one was expecting: Beyoncé.

The "Lemonade" singer was there to present the Institute's Franklin J. Shaffner Alumni Medal to AFI grad and director Melina Matsoukas, who worked with the singer on multiple music videos, including the award-winning video for "Formation."

Said the music superstar of her longtime collaborator: "She is holding up a mirror for people who look like you and me to see ourselves, saying, 'You are beautiful, and your stories matter.' She is fearless, no matter the challenges, and believes in breaking stereotypes in the industry, hiring marginalized creators, especially women. As a woman of color, conformity is not her thing."

Jamie Foxx was the first to speak about Washington, offering up a story about how he invited Washington over to his house, where he had hired a mariachi band to play. "I just tried to do something different. When I told him I got a mariachi band, he went: 'OK. OK. Let's see this mariachi'," Foxx recalled, employing his best Washington impersonation.

"Mr. Washington's arrival was a seismic moment for my generation. It was hard to articulate the pride we all felt in seeing one of us as a leading man working at the highest level," said Oscar winner Mahershala Ali from the Dolby stage.

And Michael B. Jordan talked about how Washington's performance in Glory informed his own performance as Killmonger in superhero movie Black Panther, while Jordan's Marvel co-star Chadwick Boseman offered: "There would be no Black Panther without Denzel Washington."

Washington, the eight-time Oscar nominee and two-time winner for his performances in Training Day and Glory, was the 47th recipient of AFI's honor. The gala, which featured a moving performance by Jennifer Hudson of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," was taped and is set to air on June 20 on TNT, followed by encore presentations on sister network TCM.

Washington, who was last seen in theaters with action sequel The Equalizer 2, is readying to play Lord Macbeth in an A24 and Scott Rudin production of William Shakespeare's Macbeth from director Joel Coen that co-stars Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. Coen and McDormand were front and center at the Thursday evening ceremony, along with Paramount head Jim Gianopulos, Frank Marshall, Netflix's Ted Sarandos and Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek.

Also at the event, it was announced that Kathleen Kennedy would be taking over for Howard Stringer as the elected chair of the AFI Board of Trustees. "I am sorry not to be with you tonight, but the new immigration laws in your country are far too stringent," said Stringer in a video message announcing Kennedy's election. "I am leaving you in the best of hands, for my role will be filled by one of the most dynamic producers and executives in movie history."

Julia Roberts, who due to a scheduling conflict missed out on presenting last year's AFI honor to George Clooney, was on hand this year to honor her Pelican Brief co-star, while Jodie Foster offered well-wishes to her Inside Man counterpart. And Antoine Fuqua said his Training Day actor "brings his A-game, every day."

Legendary actress Cicely Tyson received a standing ovation ahead of her speech, during which she talked about the four decade-long relationship between Washington and his wife, Pauletta, who were joined at the gala by two of their children, Malcolm and Katia. "They made it their business to put their family first, and that is why they are still together," noted Tyson.

Lee, who first worked with Washington on 1990's Mo' Better Blues and directed the actor in his Oscar-nominated performance in Malcolm X, was the evening's final speaker and handed Washington his award, saying, "We are talking about the G.O.A.T. We are talking about Michael Jordan. We are talking about Frank Sinatra. We are talking about Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis. That is the rarified air that Denzel Washington lives and breathes in."

For his part, when Washington took the stage, he began his acceptance speech by saying, "If nothing else, I am living proof of the power of God. Anything you think you see and you think you know where it comes from, the opportunities that I have been afforded, I have been given by the grace of God."

After thanking everyone from Lee to Ridley Scott and Bruce Paltrow, Washington closed the night with a suggestion: "In this Twitter, meme, mean world we have created for our children, the least we can do is think about young people and the future and to, collectively, do the best we can to try to turn this thing around. What an opportunity we have, because tomorrow is the first day of the rest of our lives."

The tribute special will premiere on TNT on Thursday, June 20 at 10pm.

Wimbledon 2019: Cori Gauff, 15, beats Venus Williams in massive upset, says 'goal to win title' - News Nation

Posted: 01 Jul 2019 09:31 PM PDT

Cori Gauff, at 15 the youngest ever qualifier for Wimbledon, is not content with just beating five-time champion Venus Williams -- now she wants to win the title. The teenage American, who was not even born when Williams won her first two Wimbledon singles titles, showed not an ounce of fear on Court One, making light of the 24 years age difference and her ranking of 313 as she eased to a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Gauff made no bones about her ambitions at the tournament. "My goal is to win it," she said. "I said this before: I want to be the greatest.

"My dad told me that I could do this when I was eight. "I'm still, like, not 100% confident. But you never know what happens." Gauff said she was determined to make the most of her opportunities.

"I mean, like my motto is just like wing it," she said. "I've said that before. This is kind of a sad thing, we're all going to die one day, I just want to make the most of it." Gauff, who revealed Rihanna and Beyonce were her role models off the court, said she had not allowed her admiration of childhood idol Williams affect her play. However, she did have a slight wobble at the end when she let slip three match points.

Williams, whose exploits along with her younger sister Serena inspired Gauff to take up the sport, made no secret of how far Gauff could go. "I think the sky's the limit, it really is," said Williams.

"Just have fun. Enjoy life. That's all you can do." Gauff, who said Roger Federer had been a big help too re-energising her and could claim some credit for her winning the French Open junior title last year, said she had finally been able to muster the courage to address one of the Williams sisters after twice failing to prior to that.

"I was just telling her thank you for everything she's done," said Gauff. "She and her sister have been, like, heroes for me and many other little girls out there. I was just thanking her." Gauff sank into her chair and cried in the immediate aftermath of the victory.

Later she recalled the previous time she had been reduced to tears. "The movie 'Endgame' when Ironman died, I was crying," she said. "Every time I think of it, I get teary-eyed because I really liked Ironman."

Gauff, though, said there is another side of her when she is off the court. "I'm definitely really goofy off the court," she said. "I'm always cracking jokes. I was practicing, people were taking pictures of me. "Actually quite a few people. I was actually, like, smiling.

"The pros who have been here for a long time, they're serious. "But I can't just help laugh because it's weird for people to take pictures of me and not smile."

VIRAL MOMENT EVERYONE'S TALKING ABOUT: Donnie Yen Wins the Bottle Cap Challenge

While many people believed that no one would be able to beat actor Jason Statham at the Bottle Cap Challenge, a viral competition in which participants try to unscrew the top of a bottle cap by performing a roundhouse kick, that was before action star Donnie Yen threw his name in the game.

While wearing a red Toronto Raptors t-shirt in the gym, Yen posted the slow-motion video on his Instagram in which the 55-year-old Ip Man film series star not only used an environmentally friendly glass water bottle, he performed the roundhouse kick blindfolded.

The Bottle Cap Challenge was originally started by UFC Champion Farabi Davletchin, but caught fire after Featherweight Champion Max Holloway accepted the challenge, and passed it on to singer John Mayer, who gamely accepted. While Davletchin, Mayer, Holloway and Statham's videos went viral, after watching Yen gracefully knock off the bottle cap without even being able to see, it was clear the viral competition was now over, and that a champion has been named.
